Arturo Álvarez
Arturo Álvarez, born in Pontevedra in 1964, is a renowned Spanish artist whose work spans sculpture and design, focusing on the transformative qualities of light. A self-taught artist, Álvarez draws inspiration from nature and human forms, creating lighting pieces and scenographies known for their evocative volumes and distinctive personality. In the early 1990s, he began experimenting with glass, mastering vitreaux and Tiffany techniques to create lighting that merged Art Deco and Art Nouveau influences with contemporary aesthetics. Over the years, Álvarez’s work evolved, embracing Bauhaus principles and experimenting with shapes, perspectives, and innovative materials. His designs are celebrated for their daring reinvention of form and volume, resulting in pieces that are both functional and sculptural. In recent years, Álvarez's style has leaned toward abstraction, with a focus on simple geometric forms that still evoke natural references. He has also begun incorporating feminine forms, bringing a nuanced exploration of human relationships into his work. Álvarez's current creations use light as a medium to explore themes of humanity, relationships, and the interplay of light and shadow. Through varied techniques, he delves into artistic expressions where light and shadow elicit emotional responses, furthering his exploration of light as a storytelling and emotive tool.
